What They Say
Skyworth launched in China two 8K OLED TVs, the W82 and W92 which are 65″ and 88″ sets, respectively. There’s a video about the W82 here. The W82 can be bent to 2000R for movies or 1500R for gaming and Skyworth calls the feature OLED Basic Module (OBM) Transform. It has a 120Hz OLED, but can accept input at 240Hz. It supports VRR and Wi-fi 6. It will cost RMB30K ($4,575) from May in China.
The W92 support 120Hz refresh. There are dual MEMC chips for high quality motion and the W92 includes Skyworth’s own ‘Acoustic Glass Sound’ technology, that uses four drivers to vibrate the whole front surface. There are also an Acoustic Built-in ‘Air Motion Transformer’ (presumably a passive radiator) and ‘pneumatic’ tweeters.
There is an integrated 12mp camera that has three axis rotation on both sets.
The W92 will cost RMB200K, around $30,000 and will be sold in China.
What We Think
The bendable OLED was claimed as a first. It brought back memories of early demonstrations of bendable TVs, but now I think about it, I can’t be sure that the sets were ever taken beyond prototype/concept stage. This kind of feature might attract some interest as a gimmick, but it rarely seems to be a long lasting one as it will add cost, complexity and potential warranty issues, and is unlikely to be used very often in practice.
