Simplay Can Test HDMI Alt Mode

Simplay Labs, LLC, a Lattice Semiconductor company said that its Shanghai, China lab is now ready to test HDMI Alternate Mode (“Alt Mode”) for USB Type-C Specification. Similar services will be available at Simplay Labs’ facility in Taiwan by the end of Q1 ’17. In addition, all Simplay Labs locations are ready to test HDCP 2.2 IIA Specification supporting the Miracast interface. Ultra HD Premium certification testing will be offered at Simplay Labs’ Shenzhen, China location starting in April 2017.

Simplay Labs developed a test tool approved by DCP in 2016 in anticipation of the release of displays, smartphones and tablets capable of supporting the HDCP 2.2 IIA Specification.

HDMI Alt mode is some way behind but getting testing place is a critical step in trying to get the mode supported. As we reported from MWC, Samsung is expected to support the DisplayPort alt mode in the S8 as it uses the Qualcomm 835 (at least in some countries) and this chip has integrated support for that mode. Sony has the same chip and a USB Type-C port in its XZ Premium phone, shown at MWC, but it’s not clear yet if it supports the alt mode.

There is some concern in Europe that the version shipping of the S8 will be the Exynos version, rather than the Qualcomm version, as some reports have suggested that there will be a big performance difference between the two in graphics especially. (BR)
