Sharp Wants to Develop as a Brand

In a follow up to the news that Sharp is closing a refrigerator factory in Japan, the Nikkei reports that Sharp is looking to further develop its brand and both design and technology of higher value added devices while trying to move more manufacturing of simpler products, such as white goods, to lower cost contractors within the Foxconn group. This is intended to improve the margin of the business as the white good business is said to have been profitable. (Sharp OLED Business Ramping Up, Appliances Moving). At a company meeting, CEO, Tai Jeng-wu is quoted as saying that:

“Sharp is no longer an LCD company. It will become a brand”
