Samsung is Not Looking to Commercialise OLED + QD

At a TV launch event in Korea, Han Jong-hee, head of Samsung Electronics’ visual display business has confirmed that the company is not trying to make any kind of OLED TV, but is focusing strongly on the possibility of using microLEDs, He did acknowledge that R&D work is going on to look at the concept of blue OLED plus quantum dot technology, but there are no commercialisation plans. On the other hand, it is looking at using QDs for colour conversion on LEDs (as we have reported for some time).

Choo Jong-seok, EVP of the visual display business at Samsung is quoted by the Korea Herald as saying that “We hope to take more than 60 percent of the market share in the world’s 75-inch-or-larger TV market.”

Samsung still plans to bring a 146″ microLED TV to market, but pricing is likely to be “well over $100,000”. It is likely to be made in Vietnam. (which would avoid the duty issues with China if they go ahead).

As we reported from ProLight and Sound, the commercial version of “The Wall” is being listed at around €150,000. The firm’s 110″ LCD started at $150,000 some years ago, so it might be the starting point for the Wall.

I suggested the idea of a blue OLED with quantum dots last year, but when I talked to LG Display about this, the reaction has been viscerally negative. The QD vs OLED battle in TV is as ‘religious’ as the PC vs Mac battle! (BR)
