What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung Display (SDC) has sold and transferred its LCD patents to TCL’s CSOT panel making subsidiary which bought the Samsung Suzhou fab in China in 2020. Samsung has an investment in CSOT and the company supplies panels to Samsung’s TV business. The report said that up to 2,000 patents were part of the deal.
The Elec said that some industry insiders believe that CSOT may use the patent portfolio against its rival, BOE, which is trying to take share from Samsung in small OLEDs for smartphones.
What We Think
This kind of deal makes absolute sense today – but I couldn’t have imagined it when I think back to my first trip to IMID when SDC and LGD were targeting more than 50% market share in the LCD market. (and they got there!) But, time moves on… (BR)
