According to GfK, 20 percent more smart TVs were sold in Germany in 2020 than in the previous year (5.5 million), with around 6.6 million TV sets sold. The share of smart TV sets that enable the use of apps or catch-up TV via HbbTV and the internet continued to rise, reaching 89 per cent in 2020 – six percentage points more than in 2019 (83 per cent). In total, almost 47 million smart TVs have been sold in Germany since 2012.
Big sellers in 2020 were literally TVs with a screen diagonal of 55 inches and larger, of which around 3.2 million were sold last year. This represents a significant increase of 32 per cent compared to 2019 (2.4 million units).
Carine Chardon, managing director of Deutsche TV-Plattform: “The restrictions in public life due to the Covid 19 pandemic have created momentum in the TV set business in 2020. Nevertheless, the increased sales figures are good news for manufacturers and retailers – and also for content providers, because the rising market penetration of smart TVs increases the basis for the introduction of innovative services.”
