What We Think
There has been quite high consistentcy in the ratings of the best TVs this year. While the exact ranking may have varied a small amount, the sites and testers that I tend to give credence to have been choosing the top three here. That Sony continues to be in the top three shows that there is a lot more to the set than the panel.
Several years ago, I gave a number of training sessions to a company that was struggling with the sales argument that ‘you use panels from XYZ supplier, so the sets must be the same’. We spent the day, ostensibly with me helping them to fully understand all the items on a specification sheet. In the end, almost everything apart from resolution, brightness and contrast (these were signage displays, so response time was not an issue) were the result of the engineering decisions of the set maker and were not the result of the panel used.
