What They Say
I spotted a report in Advanced TV about research from Hub Entertainment Research on the use of Smart TVs in the US based on a survey of 5,204 selected consumers. You can go here to get a free excerpt (registration required). Some of the findings of the study are that:
- 52% of homes have a 4K capable TV set (and the same number has a ‘Smart home’ device) and 67% claim that they have seen 4K content
- 8% claim to have an 8K set and 14% say they are likely to buy an 8K set in the next year.
- 50% have a voice capable TV remote
- 76% have a Smart TV and 57% of all TVs are now smart TVs in the installed base
- 12% of homes are said to have a VR device with videogaming the prime driver (73%)
- There is good awareness of 5G as a term, and those ‘very interested’ increased from 37% to 50% over the last year.
However, the report points out that 64% of TV households stream on a Smart TV monthly. That means that 15% of owners are not using the ‘smarts’ in the TV.
What We Think
This kind of data always needs caution. User reported of monitor resolutions in the past used to include significant numbers claiming to use resolutions that didn’t exist in the market. And consumers ‘likely to buy’ often don’t actually buy new technologies and products. (BR)
