What They Say
Business Korea reported that Sony plans to be one of the first two TV suppliers to use QD-OLED panels from SDC, following Samsung Electronics. The paper reported that Samsung will show its QD-OLED TVs at CES in January.
What We Think
This is not really news, but coming from Business Korea adds some weight to the rumours and speculation. SDC is reported to have started production of QD-OLED panels in this quarter, so actual production units might well start to appear quite early next year. Traditionally, TV brands show their models for the new year at CES, then clear their inventory by the end of the first half, having launched to their channels during Q1, ready to stock up for the sales that are stronger in the second half. With the QD-OLED, the performance will be significantly different from its QLED sets for Samsung, so itit will not have to clear out existing products and could launch earlier. Sony does have OLEDs, but if it positions QD-OLED at higher pricing than its OLEDs, it might be able to do the same. (BR)
