Qualcomm VRDK Sets Scene for S8/Gear VR

Qualcomm has released a new VR development kit, the VRDK, for the Snapdragon 835 processor which is the flagship chip for the company at the moment and was including in the new Sony phone at MWC and is widely expected to be the processor in the Galaxy S8 (and which is being made by Samsung in a 10nm process).

The new VRDK supports displays up to 2560 x 1440 (four megapixels) split across dual displays and six degrees of freedom motion tracking. The SDK also supports multiple one MP cameras for mixed reality applications and the chip, as we have reported, includes support for USB Type-C with the DisplayPort Alt mode. The company has been working with sensor makers including Leap Motion for gesture tracking and SMI for gaze.

Qualcomm has shown the SDK at the GDC and some lucky people got a chance to try it.

Analyst Comment

The VRDK will give a good idea of what is possible with the new Gear VR (although it has no gaze tracking).
