What They Say
Qualcomm has a new chip series, the AR2 Gen 1 that is intended for use in smartglasses. The processor, co-processor, and Wi-Fi 7 system combo is said to take up 40% less PCB space than the earlier XR2 reference design. Features include
- Support for up to 9 concurrent cameras
- Wi-Fi 7 with claimed <2ms sustained latency and 40% less power and High Band Simultaneous Multi-link
- 45″ less wires (Compared to the Wireless AR Smart Viewer Reference Design powered by Snapdragon XR2 Platform)
- “State of the Art’ AI features
The company also has a new Wireless AR Smart Viewer Reference Design that includes Dual microOLED binocular display to enable 1920 x 1090 per eye, frame rates up to 90Hz and a no-motion-blur feature intended to deliver a seamless AR experience. Dual monochrome cameras and one RGB camera on the smart viewer enable six-degrees of freedom (6DoF) head tracking and hand tracking enables gesture recognition.
What We Think
Better processors is one of those ‘necessary but not sufficient’ items on the long list of challenges. Still, it’s a welcome one and it’s good to see Qualcomm pushing on in AR.
