Putman: UltraHD Spells End of 1920 x 1080 Sets

Pete Putnam

Pete Putman of HDTV Expert has predicted that the production of ‘ordinary’ (1920 x 1080) TV screens will cease by the end of 2016/2017. Quoted in the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers’ (SMPTE) Newswatch publication, Putman says that we are approaching price parity between 1920 x 1080 and UltraHD sets, with a “relatively small” manufacturing premium. He also predicts the end of 8-bit colour and a move to 10-bit “as a minimum”.
