Advanced TV reports predictions for 2022 that include the prediction that Roku could be bought by a major tech company, and suggests that it could be a ‘perfect fit’ for Apple. It also predicts a continued rise in smartTV, with standalone streaming players declining in share.
The firm thinks that more companies will develop their own TV operating systems.
“After almost 100 years, the TV set is poised to become its own gatekeeper, eclipsing ‘middlemen’ like broadcasters, cable providers, and more recently streamers,”
said David Tice, a consultant for Hub Entertainment Research.
Rounding out the five predictions it said that Netflix will feel the competition from the Discovery/Warner merger and that content libraries will an antidote to ‘content inflation’.
What We Think
I guess a purchase of Roku might make sense in some ways, but I don’t see Apple as wanting to provide the kind of support and service to other companies that Roku has to provide to its set makers. (BR)
