We recently spotted some reports that were highlighting the growth of UltraHD/4K projectors and the dramatic drop in pricing, so when we bumped into them at Infocomm, we asked our favourite projector market analysts, PMA Research if they could confirm this. Analyst, Rosemary Abowd came back to us with this information:
“Our 1Q2018 census data, published in April, shows the worldwide growth in 4K projection continues to expand. Year-on-year, unit shipments of 4K native and UHD resolution projectors has increased 859% over 1Q2017 and revenues have grown 178%. As you know, this growth is largely due to the introduction of consumer DLP projectors which began selling in large volumes in 4Q2017. Prices have fallen nearly 70% on these models over the past year with even more competitive prices expected through 2018. PMA Research forecasts worldwide volume growth for 4K and UHD projectors at about 300% in 2018. Much of this growth will be in the lower-priced models which will cap revenue growth at around 80%.”
Analyst Comment
There were some very good aggressive prices quoted for new products at Infocomm as projector makers continue to fight to develop the market. It’s the first time that I can remember that mainstream projectors have not lagged a long way behind flat panels in resolution and that may help them to maintain share. L/P prices also coming down and killing lamps would also be good for the market, I think. (BR)
