Several weeks ago, VR headset maker Pimax released a new device that is called the Pimax Portal that has been described as a Nintendo Switch that can be used for VR. It’s a handheld Android-based controller that can be inserted in a special case to become a VR headset. The handheld will start at $300, via Kickstarter and includes a 4K miniLED QD LCD and for $50 more, a case that converts it into a VR headset is available. There is an extension 8.8″ Portal XL 2560 x 1600 display with 240Hz touch and 120Hz support. The main display is claimed to support HDR and 90% of the Rec. 2020 gamut.
There are two sets of lenses – one for VR with a 100 degree (H) FOV and another with 60 degrees and 40ppd for watching high-res movies. There is a Pimax Airlink feature that uses WiGig at 60GHz for wireless external display, alternatively HDMI can be used. The
