Photonics West 2021: ‘Immersive’ 8K TV is here (in Japan)

What They Say

Optics.org reported a talk by Kohji Mitani of NHK who is described as a leader in the development of 8K technology at Japan’s Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL), when he explained what NHK is doing with its 8K technology.

Mitani showed a video of a large semi-cylindrical OLED display of 4 metres height and with a 200° field of view and also a smaller flexible OLED. He also talked about the importance of reconstructing audio using metadata to give the impression of being ‘right at the scene’. Research in this area and other areas intend to improve the feeling of immersion continues.

What We Think

NHK’s demos at IBC and NAB have often been very impressive. I really enjoyed, in particular, some years ago an 8K soccer match at IBC shown on a large JVC D-ILA projection display that was very, very immersive. Within a minute or so of starting to watch the match (with great surround sound) I was dragged into the match, even though I didn’t really care about the outcome (it was South American teams). (BR)
