Amazon’s trade-in service for old products has been expanded in Germany. Used feature phones, smartphones and tablets can now be exchanged, in addition to books, videogames, DVDs and Blu-rays. Customers will receive the value of the trade-in as credits on their Amazon account.

Screenshots and video has appeared that purport to show the Windows 9 technical preview. In a video (http://tinyurl.com/q3fnasy), German website Winfuture demonstrates the new Start menu, which incorporates both the traditional programme list and, to the right, a pane of Live Tiles.

AUO is supplying 30% of the 1.6″ LCD panels for Sony’s Smartwatch 3, say Asian sources. Innolux will also supply some panels, as Sony is apparently increasing its orders from Taiwanese makers.
There were more than 4 million pre-orders for Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first 24 hours after the products were announced. Sources in the supply chain claim that orders for fingerprint recognition solutions for smartphones and smartwatches are rising. Sources in Asia have said that LG has reduced its OLED TV sales target. The company set a target of 5 million sets in June (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 25), but has apparently now dropped that to 800,000.
In a meeting with CNet, LG’s global communication Director, Ken Hong, has said that OLED TV yields now exceed 80% – thanks to the WOLED technology it purchased from Kodak (Display Monitor Vol 16 No 47). Mass-production has begun at LG Display’s G8.5 line in Guangzhou, China. The Beijing News says that the fab is manufacturing medium- and large-sized (mainly 42″, 49″ and 55″) UltraHD LCD TV panels.
Gartner predicts that white-box mobile devices will grow strongly this year: smartphones rising 50% YoY and tablets 15.6%. The ‘world’s thinnest tablet’, the Dell Venue 8 7000, has been announced at the Intel Developer Forum- using an OLED display.
