Oops – Tech Spot Advises Against the Razer Raptor 27 Monitor

What They Say

A hat tip to my friend Dr. Jon Peddie, who spotted a review that recommends against purchasing a monitor, the Razer Raptor 27 (2021 165Hz version). The review says that it will ‘comprehensively tear this ridiculously overpriced display to shreds’. Wow – tell us what you really think!

The reviewer likes some elements of the industrial design but the response times of the panel causes concern. The table shows the ranking and the monitor is beaten by monitors that cost less than half the $800 list price.

Although chromaticity coverage is 95% of P3, as specified, the review found that the factory calibration is ‘mediocre’, with an incorrect white point out of the box.

What We Think

Reviews are not often this harsh – often reviewers are intimidated by brands. However, it’s my experience that readers can see through false reviews, so it’s much better for the credibility of the publication to be harsh.

Many (many) years ago, I was ‘Shopper Labs’ in the UK for graphics board testing. I tested the first Nvidia NV1 (I think) graphics board and it was, frankly, rubbish. I pleaded with the editor to not publish the review under my name, as Nvidia was a client for other parts of my business. Still, Nvidia clearly new it was no good and pivoted its technology approach to follow more closely what others were doing and the rest, as the saying has it, is history. (BR)
