What They Say
OLED-Info reported data, attributed to Omdia, on LG Electronics’ 2021 shipments which were over 4 million in 2021, more than double the level of 2020. In Q4, the firm shipped 1.9 million TVs. The total market was 6.5 million, giving LGE a 62% share. Omdia expects sales to double again with LGE getting to over 8 million units. The ASP of OLED TVs was $1,860 in 2021, more than three times the ASP of LCDs at $507.
What We Think
This is in-line with what we would expect to see. Given that, as I understand it, OLED panel capacity is limited this year, I wonder if a deal with Samsung would limit the growth of LGE’s OLED TV business prospects?
I saw a story in the Elec yesterday that LG Display had proposed a transparent OLED TV to LG Electronics (up to now they have only been offered for professional applications). There was no information on what the group would do to provide black areas – I guess there would be a monochrome black layer. The reports said that Xiaomi offered a 55″ transparent TV in 2020 called the Mi Lux, but sold few units. (BR)
