MWC 2017 Catch-Up

As usual, after finalising our MDM report, we found several stories that slipped through the cracks or that we didn’t spot at the time and found elsewhere.

Omate was showing a new 4G-enabled smartwatch that includes a GPS tracker and is built to meet IP67 standards. The smartwatch is based on a Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. The display is a 1.3″ square-shaped display (unusual these days) with a resolution of 240 x 240.

hankeThe creator of Pokemon Go, John Hanke of Niantic, was interviewed by the BBC about the success of the game. He said that the success was a complete surprise and he said that it was really hard to keep the application running when the servers were running at a ‘level of frenzy’. At one point there was a 9,000 person spontaneous event in San Francisco! In the long term, Hanke said that he believes that AR is more important in the long term than VR as it becomes something you can use all day.

Waves Audio was at the show to talk about its development with Realtek for audio. Waves support allows 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound to any audio device and also has support for VR applications, ensuring that wherever the head is positioned, the correct sound field is created. Realtek has put the technology into its WNX7000 audio DSP. Waves’ claim of quality is supported by a technical Emmy award.
