Olum to develop Gen 8.5 OLED FMM

What They Say

The Elec reported that Olum Material is developing a new fine metal mask (FMM) for Gen 8.5 (2200x2500mm) OLED substrates. Up to now FMM has been limited to G6 fabs and have typically been supplied by Dai Nippon Printing (DNP). The company calls its technology ‘Cell FMM’ uc-FMM or putting individual tiles into an open mask grid. The firm said that its masks can be thinner to allow higher resolution panels. At the moment, the firm said, it has accuracy of 5?m, with a target of 3?m by the end of the year. It is also developing the positioning equipment with Top Engineering. It claims to have filed 150 patents related to the technology.

What We Think

This news is towards the edge of my knowledge, but I do know that over the years, I have heard many proposals to replace FMM for patterning of OLED materials, but still it remains the technology of choice for OLED makers despite the challenges in sag and in more thickness than is ideal for the users. Moving up to G8.5 makes IT OLED panels more competitive. (BR)
