OLED Market for Foldable Phones Poised to Double by 2028

The latest analysis from UBI Research projects a significant uptick in the foldable phone sector, with OLED display shipments forecasted to soar to 52.7 million units by 2028, up from 27.4 million in 2024. The report details a steady increase in demand for OLED screens designed for foldable phones, with Samsung Display’s shipments expected to rise modestly to 13.4 million units in 2023, marking a 6.3% increase from the previous year.

In 2023, BOE saw a more than threefold jump in their OLED shipments for foldable phones, reaching 6.2 million units compared to 1.9 million in 2022. Concurrently, TCL and Visionox shipped 1.1 million units each.

Despite the robust competition from Chinese manufacturers, Samsung Display is predicted to maintain its lead position in the foldable phone market. Samsung Electronics, which relies on Samsung Display for its panel needs, is anticipated to unveil an expanded lineup of Galaxy Fold series this year. Moreover, Apple’s forthcoming foldable iPhone was expected to feature Samsung Display’s OLED panels however, rumors on tech blogs now suggest that Apple may be delaying a launch from late 2026 to early 2027 as it struggles with the display technology.
