What They Say
Blog site Protocol published some of its highlight articles of the year and included one from the COO of Niantic, the developer of the Pokemon Go app. The article was originally published at the end of July and in it, Megan Quinn, the COO, said that she believed that we were then some 12 to 24 months from an inflection point of new form factors and technology that could mean a breakthrough in AR. The firm has worked with Qualcomm in developing reference designs, but she said that there are no plans to make their own hardware.
What We Think
Well, I would think that we are still a year or two away from any great breakthrough, but whereas up to a year ago I know I would have been in enough ‘back rooms’ at trade shows to have a good sense of where developments were up to, I’m feeling a bit ‘out of the loop’ at the moment. Roll on the vaccine and a return to real world briefings! (although my elderly mother-in-law has already had one dose). (BR)
