New Image Compression Standard Could Reduce Latency in VR

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) has announced a new image compression standard called JPEG XS, designed to allow for higher-quality images to be transmitted with a lower degree of latency, reducing the motion sickness associated with VR experiences. The format is said to reduce file sizes by a factor of six or below as opposed to the usual factor of around ten and also has potential applications for AR, movie editing, drones and space imagery, and autonomous vehicles

JPEG XS is currently awaiting final approval by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
