New DSCC Report on MiniLED Backlit Displays Predicts Market Uptake in 2021

DSCC has announced the release of its brand new MiniLED Backlight Technology, Cost and Shipment Report. With this report, DSCC provides a comprehensive cost analysis of MiniLED backlights and forecasts a significant market uptake next year, with shipments predicted to rise from 0.05 million units in 2020 to 8.9 million units in 2021.

Adoption of MiniLED technology will gain significant momentum in 2021 as Samsung and Chinese brands launch LCD TVs with MiniLED backlights. Samsung is said to be targeting sales of 2 million units. Low-end MiniLED backlit LCD TVs will have a cost advantage over OLED TVs (WOLED and inkjet OLED), while still being more expensive than conventional LCD TVs. However, growth will not be restricted to the TV segment. Apple’s suppliers have also started to manufacture a MiniLED backlight for the new iPad Pro, which will be released in 2021.

MiniLED backlit displays first started to appear in professional monitors and premium TVs in 2019. Unlike the smaller microLEDs which are targeted at direct view displays, MiniLEDs are ideally sized for integration into LCD backlights with local dimming capability. By increasing the number of local dimming zones, MiniLED backlit LCD panels can achieve a contrast ratio above 1,000,000:1 and higher efficiency without sacrificing brightness. Thus, MiniLED backlit LCD panels can meet HDR (High Dynamic Range) specifications. The thickness of the panel is also reduced, compared with displays using conventional full array local dimming. By combining a MiniLED backlight with a quantum dot enhancement film (QDEF), the resulting LCD has a wide color gamut covering over 99% of the DCI-P3 standard.

Thanks to their superior performance, MiniLED backlit displays can be positioned to compete directly with OLED panels in multiple applications. As the supply chain matures and the manufacturing costs decrease, DSCC’s analysis shows that the three largest segments in volumes will be TVs, notebook PCs and tablets. DSCC forecasts total shipments will surpass 48 million units in 2025.
