NASA Describes Live UHD Broadcast from the International Space Station

Rodney Grubbs of NASA MSFC described how NASA created a live UHD video feed from the International Space Station (ISS) to NAB 2017 in Las Vegas. The program featured a Red Dragon camera, a playout device (Redcast), and an encoder specially designed by AWS/Elemental that were all delivered to the ISS.

He described some issues like the lack of an embedded sync audio from the Redcast module, which was overcome by using the audio from a separate HD camera. AWS/Elemental ultimately produced a live UHD show with no glitches at NAB 2017. However, there was a full 10 seconds of latency due to the encoding delays and long routing of signals.
