What They Say
Microsoft and Volkswagen are working together to optimise the experience of using VR and AR headsets in moving vehicles.
The so-called “moving platform” uses data from the headset’s cameras and an inertial measurement unit to acclimate the VR technology to a simultaneously static and moving space, like a car.
The collaboration with VW began in 2018 when the manufacturer started using VR to train drivers for high-speed races.
What We Think
Much of the technology to map onto glasses would also be needed for more sophisticated HUDs, I think, to map images onto the view ahead, so I’m not surprised to see this collaboration. AR ought to be able to avoid issues that cause sickness in applications where the real world may not be visible. And, of course AR glasses can be used as HUDs. I can see the external devices improving more rapidly than the built in ones. The GPS in my car doesn’t get much use as Google Maps on my smartphone is so much better. (BR)
