What They Say
Meta had to disable some AR features on Instagram recently following the adoption of new laws in Texas and Illinois in the US that limit the storage and distribution of personal data. The decision was made after facial recognition database company Clearview AI agreed to settle a case brought against it in Illinois by the ACLU.
The company plans to re-introduce the features with an opt-in notice to explain the technology.
What We Think
I’m reminded of the time when Bavarian legal authorities made a similar decision based on the idea that capturing an image on a camera sensor was enough on its own to breach privacy laws.
Just as we went to press, Clearview AI was fined £7.5 million ($9.4 million) for collecting images without the subject’s permission. (BR)
