Germany-based Merck KGaA has invested €30 million in a new OLED production plant, which will give five times the current production volume when used to full capacity. The 3600m² plant has been 14 months in construction, but has now been officially opened to make high purity OLED materials for use in displays and lighting.

Although mainly known for its Liquid Crystal materials in the display world (and it’s the largest supplier of LC materials by some distance), Merck has been working on OLED materials for some time. It was back in 2005 that we reported on the purchase of Covion, an OLED material startup, by Merck. The company also has R&D in quantum rods, so looks to have an interest in most display materials!
