MediaTek has a new 4K smartTV chip, the MT9638 which includes an integrated AI processing unit for applications such as scaling with real time content and scene recognition, picture quality optimisation and voice control (using up to four microphones). The chip also includes VRR functions (via HDMI 2.1a) and MEMC. Other connectivity is via USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi 6. It is based on a quad core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU and a Mali-G52 MC1 GPU.
HEVC, VP9 and AV1 codecs and HLG, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are also on the feature list with support for up to 2304 backlight dimming zones. The chip can support Technicolor/Philips JHDR (ESTI TS 103 433) and is said to include ‘China HDR (Preliminary Support)’
Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X are included for improved sound experience.
Resume time using audio is one second.
Sets using the chip are due to hit the market in Q2 2021.
