What They Say
Magic Leap was at Photonics West and gave some new information and a ‘sneak peek’ at its new headsets. The headset is said to have a weight down from 316g to 248g although the ML2 no longer includes a battery and processor which are now in a separate box and based on AMD rather than Nvidia’s Tegram. The eyebox is said to be twice as large to accomodate a wide range of IPD.
A feature is ‘dynamic dimming’ which can lower the transmissivity of the optical system from, 22% to 0.3%, allowing objects to be visible even in bright rooms and to give a sense of black in objects. The dimming is segmented and there has been speculation that it is set by the gaze tracking. There are two eyetracking cameras per eye. Upload VR took data from previous announcements and this session to speculate on the shape and size of the field of view and thinks it might be 45° horizontally and 55° vertically.
The Information’s Reality Check said that the new controller uses optical tracking rather than the magnetic system of the ML1 and the OS is changing to Android.
What We Think
I still don’t quite understand how Magic Leap was able to get the level of investment that it did. For those that missed it, Ken made this comment on my Display Daily the other day on the Metaverse. “. The reason I’m not rich is that I can’t bring myself to invest in things I don’t understand. That’s also the reason I’m not poor. — Ken Werner”. Me too! (BR)
