As expected, the Korean Government has approved the plan by LG Display (Korean Government to Formally Approve LGD China Plan). This will be the first time that a Korean company has built a production line outside Korea and the government had been concerned about the leakage of technology and know-how to China.
Analyst Comment
LG has been reported to have continued to develop the Guangzhou site while the discussion went on with the government and was reported to have already ordered some production equipment for delivery in the final quarter of 2018. That should mean the start of production in 2019 and DSCC reported the forecast below at its event in Japan several months ago. This shows some production (LGD GP3-1/2 G8.5) in 2019, with full capacity from the first line in 2020 and a second additional line that will reach its full level by 2021. Anything beyond 2019 is very speculative at the moment. LG will be the only volume supplier of large OLEDs until at least 2021. (BR)
