OLED TV To Dominate TV High End

We saw some interesting data and a forecast quoted by Business Korea which attributed the data to IHS Markit. At the time of reporting, we hadn’t got confirmation of the data, but will update the article on the website if we find it is incorrect.

In the article, the share of the $2,500 and above market was 43.5″ for the first three quarters of the year, up from 15.5% in 2015 and up to 35% in 2016. The report also said that IHS is forecasting that this will rise to over 50% next year as OLED supply increases.

Analyst Comment

This is basically in line with the data that LG was quoting at the OLED Day in Munich, but the forecast was not released at that point. If it turns out to be correct, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is, it highlights the challenge for Samsung. The high end of the TV market is where any profit in TV is. If you’re not in it, you have little chance of building a profitable TV business. (BR)
