This is quite an amazing achievement. Even the 77″ UltraHD panel has drawn real admiration from even hardened display specialists at events such as SID’s Display Week.

There are real challenges in updating and driving an OLED of this resolution. In fact, I would be slightly surprised if LGD showed anything other than static images at CES and LGD hasn’t said what refresh rate it can achieve.

It’s only around three and a half years that I sat with a senior engineer from LGD at SID while he explained how hard the company was finding the move UltraHD. The key problem is that the panel has to be dynamically compensated over the life time of the panel as the performance changes over time. Of course, that’s not a big issue on a sample that only needs to last a few days, but will be a big challenge when there is so much data. Achieving a high yield has also been a big issue and that must be a lot harder at 8K.

Of course, the panel will use sub-pixel addressing (and even some of the 8K LCDs may do this), so it may not be ‘true’ 8K for data applications. However, I am looking forward to seeing it! (BR)
