LG to Launch Steam-based VR Headset

At the Game Developers’ Conference (GDC), SteamVR said that LG is working on a new headset that will use the SteamVR platform. A prototype headset shown at the event used a 1440 x 1280 3.64″ display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 110º field of view (we also heard 120º if the display is closer. The display is said to have come from LG Display. A reviewer that saw the headset confirmed that the performance was not dissimilar to the HTC Vive. LG is also developing controllers and the company told an interviewer that pricing is likely to be comparable to the Vive or Rift.

Separately Steam has said that of the 500 companies that have signed up for the Steam ‘Lighthouse’ technology, ‘a bunch more’ are developing headsets. It’s understood that HTC had an exclusive deal with Steam for a year. The final LG headset is likely to be out ‘sometime this year’.
