LG Runs an OLED Design Competition

What They Say

LG Display had a competition with UK design magazine Dezeen, to create new OLED-based products and received 220 entries from more than 50 countries.

The winner was ‘Scroll’ which was based on a a transparent OLED mounted above a wide shelf.

The second prize went to ‘Signal’, a foldable OLED that doubles as a lamp. Third prize went to a TV mounted on a trolley.

There is a video about the project showing a number of other designs here.

What We Think

Of course, at the current state of the art, the transparent TV is not really a good solution. Unlike Panasonic’s demos, which combined a transparent OLED with a black LCD behind, LG’s transparent displays have not had a black background. They would look great as signage, but being able to see the textures of the wallcovering would be very irritating. I’m slightly surprised that there hasn’t been more development of the idea of transparent TVs. At CES and IFA when Panasonic showed the concept, it got a lot of interest from consumers. (BR)
