What They Say
LG Display said in a press release that it would add 83″ and 42″ OLEDs to its range in addition to the current 88″, 77-inch, 65″, 55″, and 48″ OLED TV displays. The 77″ will be available with the cooling plate to offer a higher brightness version (previously only available from Panasonic). The firm also said that it will extend the product line down to smaller sizes in the 20″ to 30″ range in the future for those that want to use OLEDs for gaming and productivity.
Separately, Business Korea quoted Omdia as saying that it expects the value of LG’s OLED display sales to reach around $9.15 billion this year. It also said that the value of the OLEDs for TV in 2020 accounted for 53% of all of its TV panel sales, ahead of LCD for the first time. The share was up from 33% in 2019. For smartphones, OLEDs accounted for 63% of sales. The report quotes Yuanta Securities as forecasting that LG Display’s mobile p-OLED display sales will hit $8.8 billion USD in 2021 and $10 billion 2022, up from $6.6 billion in 2019.
What We Think
At the moment, we have only had press releases from LGD, but we’re promised access to its usual impressive range of demos, although it won’t be the same virtually! European and Japanese customers have been the key players in pushing LGD to make smaller OLED TVs, but I was slightly surprised to see a 42″ option now. However, there is a huge installed base of 42″ sets of different vintages and it may well be that there are a good number of buyers that just need a set to fit the rest of the furniture. A 42″ might be a nice second set or large/gaming monitor. (BR)
