What They Say
The Elec reports that LG Display is expected to order deposition equipment from Sunic Systems in Korea to make microOLED-on-silicon panels, with the aim of competing with Sony for the supply of displays for Apple’s much rumoured XR headset. LG Display is reported to be the suppler of the third OLED that may be on the outside of the headset.
The Elec reported that Sunic System had already supplied its MicroOLED deposition equipment to BOE back in 2020. The Chinese display giant is planning to apply MicroOLED technology for military applications.
What We Think
At Display Week, LG Display showed a 0.42” HD (1280 x 720 @120Hz – 3K5ppi) MicroOLED with 7,000 cd/m² after the colour filter (SID’s 60th Anniversary – Optimism in the Face of Falling Panel Prices, Demand and Profitability (Part 2)) Usually, I’m able to capture something from these very bright displays, but I was in a rush this year and my photos were horribly over-exposed. Apologies! The 0.42″ device was first shown a couple of years ago, when it had 4,000 cd/m² of luminance. It has also talked about larger sizes with resolutions up to UltraHD.
Up to now, those I have spoken to that have to buy microOLEDs have been clear about the superiority of Sony’s displays, but LGD knows a bit or two about OLEDs, too! (BR)
