LG Display’s OLED TV Panels Obtain ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ Verification From UL

LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced that it has obtained ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ marketing claim verification for its all OLED TV panels from UL, a leading global safety science company. In an industry first, LG Display’s OLED TV panels have been recognized as the first display that emits no glare.

Discomfort glare causes eyes to get tired easily due to stark differences in brightness. A typical example is the discomfort a viewer might feel when watching a bright smartphone screen in a dark bedroom.

The verification is meaningful as TV viewing time has increased with more people watching movies at home instead of at movie theaters. Amid the contactless era, not only the quality of the screen but also the consumer’s eye health has become more important, including considerations such as appropriate screen brightness.

UL’s testing is based on the Unified Glare Rating (UGR), a glare assessment recognized by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). The verification mark is issued only when the UGR is 22 or less when watching TV between 70 lux (lx), which is about the brightness of a bedroom floor lamp, and 300 lux (lx), which is equivalent to the light from a bright window.

A UL Verified Mark on an OLED TV panel indicates that the Discomfort Glare Free claim has been verified, making it easier for viewers to watch TVs in any environment. This means that most people all around the world will be able to enjoy contents on OLED screens without being bothered by eye discomfort in varied conditions, whether indirect lighting in the U.S and Europe or direct lighting in Asia. As OLED represents images with 33 million self-emitting pixels in the case of 8K, it is considered possible to achieve greater clarity by implementing an infinite contrast ratio even with minimal brightness.

OLED TV panels are the only displays that have been verified for marketing claims related to low blue light emissions as well as being flicker free and ‘Discomfort Glare Free’, which are meaningful and defining elements of eye-healthy TVs.

LG Display is planning to encourage its global OLED TV customers and distributors to use its latest ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ verification mark as part of the company’s efforts to popularize OLEDs.

“The company’s OLED TV panels have been continuously recognized by prestigious global inspection agencies as easy and safe on the eyes,” said Dr. Oh Chang-ho, Executive Vice President and Head of TV Business Unit at LG Display. He added, “Thanks to the verification this time, as well as high-profile global recognition, consumers around the world who are conscious of eye health will prefer and be able to choose OLED TVs with confidence.”
