We moved on to look at some large commercial displays. Some new transparent LCD panels use RGBW subpixels to achieve transparency of 17%. Improved transparency reduces the cost of lighting this kind of application, so is important to the applications developing. A demonstration of two panels in a QSR application showed a 50W saving in the power used in a 55″ transparent system, from 285W (RGB) to 235W (M+/RGBW).
Large displays for meetings are becoming more interesting and LG showed a 105″ 21:9 5120 x 2160 (equivalent to a “stretched” 84″ 16:9 display) panel set up for touch and for use in a meeting room. The 21:9 format works well in this application as users will not want to reach up or down too far. The demo included 10 point IR touch functionality.
