What They Say
Nikkei reported that LG Display has been promoting sales of its transparent OLEDs to the architectural industry with executives also promoting the idea to the automotive segment. The firm sees Europe as a strong potential market after a good response to a demonstration in Munich in September (LG Display to Showcase Transparent OLED at IAA 2021 in Munich). In Munich the firm showed its transparent OLED with ‘smart glass’ from Gauzy which can provide a dark background when needed. The article also promotes the idea of transparent displays in automotive windscreens.
What We Think
I’m not surprised that LG is looking for new applications for this technology. I don’t see automotive applications as a good prospect. There are stringent regulations about the transparency of car windscreens and putting an OLED in the windscreen would make it hard to reach the level required. I also worry about the issue of having a focal distance that is close to the driver. Projection systems can create a virtual focal length that is much longer than the windscreen, keeping the driver’s point of focus similar to the point needed to drive safely. (BR)
