LG adds Battery TV – probably Not an OLED

What They Say

Along with the set with a motorised cover, LG has shown the 27″ Art10 ‘StandByMe’ set which is a battery-powered wireless LCD TV. The set can be swivelled, tilted and rotated in landscape and portrait orientations and the stand has concealed wheels. LG highlighted its advantages in video conferencing as well as TV viewing. It has a remote, but also can be touch and gesture controlled.

The official announcement will be at CES.

What We Think

I remember this kind of set being popular in the time after the Fukushima disaster, when there were rolling power cuts in Japan. In fact, Japanese consumers were so careful in their use of power when it was very limited that few cuts took place in practice. However, it looked as though this kind of product could be popular in places where power is not consistent. With streamed video and satellite broadband, there could be an opportunity for off-grid sets based on hybrid/battery operation in the future. Of course, with an HDMI input, the set could also be used as an external display on a notebook, when there is no power.

However, this kind of use is likely to be in places where low cost products are needed and although pricing has not been announced, it doesn’t look like a cheap option. AVCesar, who published an article on this set, quoted a model number of OLED27AR10, but it seems to have been the only report suggesting an OLED. I don’t think it is as, up to now the only 27″ OLED from LG has been the UltraHD OLED TV with a JOLED IJP panel and costing $3,000 when it gets here. (BR)
