Leveraging The Avixa Image System Contrast Ratio (ISCR) Standard

What They Say

AV trade association and event and training supplier, Avixa, has released a new standard for Image System Contrast Ratio (ISCR), aimed at helping those specifying and installing AV systems to define appropriate minimum contrast standards for different use cases. The previous standard was based on projection. The group defines four use cases:

  • Passive viewing (simple – e.g. where’s the exit/toilet?
  • Basic decision making – airline departures or sports scores – or digital menu boards
  • Analytical decision making – e.g. reviewing engineering or architectural drawings, photo images or forensic evidence
  • Full motion video – where it is desired to get the engagement of viewers

There is a video here to explain the different modes. The ISCR sets out minimum contrast ratios for each of these applications taking into account the viewing environment.

Avixa members can download the ICSR standard, visit: www.avixa.org/standards/image-system-contrast-ratio ($$$ depending on membership level)

What We Think

This is a useful initiative, even if it only reminds those of us that want 7 figure ratios that actually that might be nice but a) it might not be essential and b) it’s the contrast in the viewing environment that is critical, not what was measured in a lightless room with black walls!

There’s a webinar about this development on 12th October. (BR)
