Lenovo Adds Portable Thin & Light Workstation

Lenovo has released a new portable workstation, the ThinkPad P1 that is said to be 35% lighter than the previous version, with weight from 1.7kg (3.76lbs). The system is intended for professional applications in content creation and engineering and has a 15.6″ display with UltraHD and touch or with FullHD. Brightness is 400 cd/m² or 300 cd/m² with AdobeRGB or 72% NTSC, respectively. The UltraHD version supports touch and 10 bit colour and both displays are IPS LCDs.

The graphics are driven by Nvidia Quadro P1000 or P2000 sub-systems.

The processors are 8th generation Xeon E-2100M or Core, all with 6 cores. Memory support goes up to 64GB (or 32GB with ECC) and two drives can be fitted for up to 4TB of SSD. Battery is 80WHr for a claimed life of 13 hours. Outputs include dual Thunderbolt 3 and an HDMI port.

Also released was the ThinkPad P72 which is available with similar displays, but with 17.3″ diagonal, and processors are the same as the P1. It is intended as a desktop replacement for the gas and oil industries, so has more certifications. Memory on the bigger machine goes up to 128GB and up to three drives are supported (Max 2TB of HDD and 4TB of SSD). The battery is 99WHr and weight goes up to 3.4Kg (7.5lbs).

Both the ThinkPad P1 and P72 will be available at the end of August starting at $1949 and $1799, respectively.

Lenovo’s P1 is a thin and light machine for professional use.

Analyst Comment

Lenovo was a sponsor of the Jon Peddie Research Siggraph lunch and gave away a system to a lucky journalist. I had everything crossed, but didn’t win. That’s what I call a real raffle prize! I didn’t have a chance to do more than have a quick look, but the UltraHD display on show looked good. (BR)
