The LEDInside site of TrendForce of Taiwan has shown what it calls a roadmap for microLED and miniLED and has forecast that the chips will generate a business valued at $1.38 billion by 2022 and to $2.89 billion by 2025. That value excludes transfer process costs.
The site sees TVs of over 75″ as an early market with support from Japanese and Korean brands. However, the firm expects that 4 million AR headsets will ship in 2025 and 18% are forecast to use the technology in a projection configuration. The firm sees advantages in microLED because it is self-emissive (unlike DLP which needs a light source) and because it can be much brighter than microOLED.
Initially, the firm expects the price of a wafer of microLEDs will be five or six times more than traditional LEDs, although the costs are expected to converge over time.
Separately, the blog showed this useful comparison of miniLED and microLED.
