LGD Will “Balance” LCD and OLED

LG Display will raise its OLED investment, as Apple prepares to adopt the technology in coming iPhones.

The claim comes from Bloomberg, which quotes LGD CEO Han Sang Beom. Han admitted that LGD was a late-comer to the small/medium OLED market, adding, “It’s undeniable that flexible OLEDs are now the mega-trend in the mobile segment and we will have to embrace that.”

Han also said, “We can’t help but rely on LCDs for the time being, because our revenue from OLEDs still accounts for less than 10 per cent [of our total sales].” He added that LGD had “never thought” about abandoning LCD – but is considering “gradually closing” older generation fabs.

At a conference on the 12th July, Han said, “The LCD and OLED business will be balanced out by 2019 and 2020. We will expand our business to [the] small and mid-size plastic OLED market, including smartphone and car, as well as the large TV market.”
