A display based on NPQD® R1 Micro LED chip goes into mass production after a joint test made by the group and Saphlux, Inc., in which the group invested. The first display using quantum dot Micro LED chip represents a major breakthrough expected to speed up commercialization of Micro LED display technology.
Micro LED is about to have its moments
NPQD® is a quantum dot chip integration technology based on Nanopores. With the unique scattering effect, nanopores greatly increases effective optical path, improves light conversion efficiency and enhances reliability of quantum dots.
NPQD® R1 Micro LED chip, jointly developed and put into mass production by the group and Saphlux, overcomes shortcomings involving cold and heat effect, bin classification, efficiency, yield and cost of traditional chips. Moreover, the chip leverages the wide gamut, stable color and consistency of quantum dots to create better display effect.
“This is a monumental breakthrough. NPQD® Micro LED chip is expected to greatly reduce the size of Micro LED chips, improve the performance of display screen, and lower production cost. While the Diamond series Micro LED launched on June 30 is to capture 80 percent of NPP market share, the application of quantum dot will help us launch better and more cost-effective products and bring LED display to civil and home markets.” said Li Jun, chairman of the group.
“We truly appreciate Leyard’s support and cooperation, which enable the mass production and commercial availability of the new technology in such a short time.” Dr. Chen Chen, CEO of the Saphlux expressed, “the successful combination of quantum dot, the optimal color solution available and Micro LED, the most advanced display technology available will bring about change in applications of commercial, AR/VR and other displays .”
Quantum dot + Micro LED
Continuous innovation is what constantly pushes Leyard forward. With a forward-looking vision, the group made an investment to acquire 12.37% shares in Saphlux in 2017 for developing quantum dot and gallium nitride related technologies and Micro LED display together.
As Saphlux’s No.2 external shareholder, we have worked and interacted closely with the company over the last five years and made a major breakthrough in NPQD®Micro LED chip technology. “We’ll make bulk purchases from Saphlux,” Li added.
As a company specializing in the third generation semiconductor technology, Saphlux leads the world in semi-polar gallium nitride material and Micro LED based on development from laboratory research at Yale University to industrialization in the past decade.
In addition to chip R1, Saphlux has also made significant progress in full color and red color conversion efficiency of the technology roadmap of T1 series Micro LED display light engine for AR/VR and been recognized by a number of industry leaders. T1 series Micro LED displays is expected to be commercialized in 2023. With 75 million yuan raised in series B round in the first half of 2022 and series B+ round to be closed soon, Saphlux has increased investment continuously in R1 chip mass production and T series product research and development.
Next, both companies will carry out frontier exploration in AR/VR and help enable the metaverse with software and hardware integrating the optical motion capture of Virtual Point under Leyard and the unique NPQD® Micro LED display of Saphlux.
