JDI Enters Agreement with SEL

Japan Display has announced plans to co-develop a backplane technology called CAAC-IGZO with Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL). ‘Next-generation displays’ are the target market, including OLED displays.

According to OLED-Info, SEL’s technology is called C-Axis Aligned Crystal (CAAC), and was originally developed with Sharp (hence the IGZO thin-film). The firm says that its backplane (which it calls CAAC-OS) has a very low off-state current. It has been used for prototypes in recent years, including a foldable OLED display; a 13.3″ 8k AMOLED display and an 81″ 8k tiled OLED display (previously shown at SID).
