IVAS US Defence Development Struggling?

What They Say

The Information’s Reality Check reported that Microsoft is “expecting negative feedback from the customer” in its development of a headset, known as IVAS and based on the HoloLens. The article suggested that the issues are related to low light performance and reliability.

The project had previously been reported to have been suffering from delays.

What We Think

The article points to possibly unrealistic expectations from military customers over the speed of development. This wouldn’t be anywhere near the first defence technology project to get caught up in delays and technical challenges. I suspect that it’s ‘in the nature of the beast’. Just this week I read that Russian soldiers invading the Ukraine have been turning to commercial mobile phones and ‘walkie talkies’ because their official technology did not work as hoped for. That was blamed on corruption in the Russian system that had siphoned off a lot of cash from the R&D projects, which is not the case with the US deal. (BR)
