Is Samsung Adjusting its Approach to Microdisplays?

According to a report in Korea’s ETNews, Samsung has made organizational changes to divide responsibilities for developing microdisplay technologies between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display. A spokesman for Samsung neither confirmed nor denied the adjustments being made.

However, it does make sense, on the surface. Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor division will now oversee LEDos development as it is still in early stages and requires heavy investment. The Compound Semiconductor Solutions (CSS) team under the division specifically leads this effort. Meanwhile, Samsung Display will focus efforts on rapidly commercializing OLEDos technology to align with product launches from companies like Apple and Google next year. They recently reorganized the microdisplay team into an independent group under the CEO to reflect this commercialization focus.

The division of labor plays to the strengths of each company. Samsung Electronics handles the more nascent LEDos given its financial resources, while Samsung Display focuses on accelerating OLEDos since it acquired key technology through the US acquisition of eMagin.
